Mom had been awake when I came in, but I pleaded exhaustion and all but ran upstairs so I wouldnât have to face her questions. And I knew she had them.
The problem was that I suspected I had even more questions than she did.
I liked Matt.
I really did.
But even though heâd asked me on another date, and Iâd agreed, I was already asking myself why.
âBecause heâs a nice guy,â I told myself as I went through my regular bedtime regimen of washing my face, moisturizing, brushing my hair and teeth.
I liked nice guys. Most of the guys Iâd dated had been defined by that singular characteristicâ¦nice. I could even proudly say that Iâd never been drawn to the bad boy type. That had been my birth motherâs domain, and Iâd never be able to look myself in the mirror if Iâd turned out to be like her.
All my life, Iâd worked to avoid even the barest resemblance.
Sheâd barely limped along through school, eventually dropping out and nothing either of my adopted parentsâher own parentsâhad said could convince her to go back.
Iâd excelled. Although I loved school in general, even when I wasnât enamored of whatever course I was taking, I had made straight Aâs and had gone on to win a merit-based scholarship that paid my entire tuition.
My mother had always struggled to hold a job, relying instead on her flavor of the month to provide for her.
I had a fierce pride in being able to provide for myself and give money to my grandparentsâthe people whoâd stepped in after my birth mother had stepped out.
Sheâd dated bad boys, drug dealers, pimps and ex-cons with a history of violent offenses, often falling into bed within thirty minutes of meeting a partner. I knew, because up until sheâd walked out of our lives forever, sheâd enjoyed regaling me with tales of her new man, the one who was âreally it this time.â
I had yet to fall into bed with a single lover.
Matt was everything I should want in a man, everything Iâd told myself I was holding out for.
But as I lay in bed, my eyes closed, it wasnât his face I saw behind my lids.
